Meet The Artist: At 21, after earning a degree in Fine Art, Sallie Harker hitched a ride on a yacht from Scotland across the Atlantic. She jumped off in Antigua, where she learned how to gild and developed a business in yacht restoration. During the island summers, she worked on her own art. She exhibited widely in the Caribbean and completed commissioned projects for hotels and private villas. In 2006, she opened the doors of Antigua's Fig Tree Studio Art Gallery.
Her Process: Sallie developed a unique technique of painting on wooden, roofing shingles using oil paint and gold leaf. Resulting pieces have a textured, sculptural quality. The power of these works comes from their three-dimensional nature and the way in which the different painted elements are overlain: the way the dancers and leaves converge, the manner in which the patterned fabric moves with the body.
